Lowrance 000-12635-001 Hook 3X Sonar
The Hook 3X Sonar from Lowrance has a transom mount transducer, which uses dual frequencies of 83k Hz (60° conical angle) and 200k Hz (20° conical angle) for wide coverage and accurate scanning. Furthermore, switching between one level of frequency to the other is swift and fast due to the page button. However, one issue a few customers faced since using it was that it gave erroneous readings in shallow water. Moving on to the display, information including water temperature, bottom structure, approximate fish locations and more, is read on its 3-inch color and backlit display with a resolution of 320 x 240. This also means the display is immune from blinding sun-glares and good enough for nighttime fishing.
One nice feature includes the Advanced signal processing (ASP) which eliminates the need to adjust settings manually. Furthermore, the Lowrance 000-12635-001 Hook 3X Sonar uses more advanced features that show great competency in target separation to denote individual fishes and Fish ID to classify different species. To add to these, this fish finder is also equipped with 4X zoom, fish alarms. However, one of our favorite features is probably the fish icon reading. This feature denotes fishes in fish icon instead of your traditional arches. We think this is far more fun and intuitive since it’s more relatable. However, you can also stick to the arches if you like that better instead. The receiver of the Lowrance 000-12635-001 Hook 3X Sonar is designed to swivel and twist, giving you various viewing angles so that you don’t have to fidget around with it every other minute. In addition, using the transducer is just as convenient since it comes with a 15-feet long cable that make installing and mounting on kayak is very easy.
And to add to all these, the Lowrance 000-12635-001 Hook 3X Sonar is waterproof, can be used in both fresh and salt waters, and offers up to 11 languages to choose from. Furthermore, it comes with a 1-year warranty and is in support by the Lowrance Service program.
Humminbird 409790-1 Helix 7 Fish Finder
The Helix 7 Fish Finder from humminbird also uses a transom mount transducer which operates on dual frequencies as well. In fact, the Helix 7 also uses frequencies of 83k Hz (60° conical angle) and 200k Hz (20° conical angle) like our former contender! However, the Helix 7 goes a notch above with its sonar capabilities with the SwitchFire™, which enhances the way you view your 2D reading. In fact, with this, you are in control of adding and eliminating variable that appear on the screen, giving you more focus and concentration.
Speaking of viewing, the Helix 7 has a whooping 7-inch display screen which is Ultra HD and has resolution of 800H x 480V; great against harsh sunlight. To add to that, the display is backlit so you will have no problem fishing in the dark. Just like the Lowrance Hook 3X Sonar, the v also offers you easy and intuitive buttons to control the entire fish finder. You get you control and adjust features like frequency-changes, display modes and more all with the press of a button. One neat thing about the Helix 7 series is that, depending on the model, you can enjoy more features like DownImaging, Unimap cartography and even GPS. In fact, advanced models even offer SD card usage! Either way, whether you get the starting model or the more advanced one, you will regardless features like dual beams, SwitchFire™, split screen, Fish ID and much more. One complaint we did get from the Helix 7 Fish Finders is that they aren’t compatible with other Humminbird units. Now, this isn’t too off-putting but some people do like to mix-and-match.
However, all Helix 7 fish finders are great for use in both fresh and salt waters, use a built-in sensor in the transducer for temperature reading, and are waterproof. As for security, Helix 7 finders come with a 2-year warranty.
